In 2024, Jisc ran two consultations to seek feedback on the Student record specification following the first collection using the new data model and system (22056).
- Post implementation consultation this sought views on a number of areas and general feedback following the first data collection with the new model.
You can read the IHE response to this consultation here. - StudentCourseSession and SessionYear consultation this focused on four proposals that had come from previous feedback related to the StudentCourseSession and SessionYear areas of the data model.

Following the consultations, changes were agreed for the 24056 and 25056 records. It was also agreed for some proposals that changes would be reviewed and considered again for 25056.
This subsequent consultation presented four scenarios relating to Guidance on returning previous StudentCourseSessions.
The consultation ran from 26 February 2025 to 10 April 2025.
Our response
In our response we welcome HESA's efforts to further consult on proposed changes to the Student record, and to address issues experienced in previous collections. However, we make clear that we cannot support further change at this time, given the significant change and increased burden of in-year collection. We urge HESA to consider any future changes to the Student record after this, with due consideration of how they will reduce burden.
We also emphasise that the data model is not compatible with flexible provision. The StudentCourseSession entity and the problems we have described in our response is one part of a broader issue. We welcome further conversations with HESA to discuss how future changes to the Student record could address issues experienced by providers operating outside of traditional academic years and patterns of activity.
