Calista Essien is studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Industrial Automation at the Engineering College of Technology (ECT).

Women in engineering continue to make their mark across the industry and Calista's journey reflects determination, growth and a commitment to advancing her expertise while building a strong foundation in the field of industrial automation.

A foundation in practice

Industrial automation is often seen as a complex engineering field that usually involves advanced systems and high levels of precision and accuracy. But for Calista Akaninyene Essien, it naturally builds on her existing engineering experience. Originally from Nigeria, Calista works for Seplat Energy, an oil and gas company, as an Instrumentation and Controls Technician. Her day-to-day work involves supporting and maintaining systems that drive industrial processes and ensure operational performance. “I settled for this course because with my background in instrumentation and controls, it resonates with what I do currently.”

The flexible learning model has been particularly helpful, as it allows me to balance my studies with other responsibilities while still staying on track.

An ECT automation upgrade

In today’s engineering environment, flexibility and practical learning have become key factors in helping professionals advance their skills while balancing work commitments. “At first, I chose ECT due to the flexibility it offered without knowing what to expect. But getting started, I would choose ECT again based on the structured programme and effective course delivery. Every topic is detailed for clear understanding.”

This is how Calista describes her overall experience at ECT: “My learning experience at ECT has been both engaging and enriching. The course structure is practical and industry-focused, which has made it easier to connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications. One of the most valuable aspects for me has been the emphasis on hands-on learning and problem-solving, as it has strengthened my confidence in applying engineering principles.”

She also highlights how the structured online learning model has supported her in balancing her studies with other responsibilities: “The flexible learning model has been particularly helpful, as it allows me to balance my studies with other responsibilities while still staying on track. I have especially enjoyed the interactive sessions and access to learning resources; these have supported my understanding and independent study.”

Next-level learning drive

Beyond structure and flexibility, Calista’s experience at ECT has also strengthened her discipline, focus, and commitment to continuous learning in industrial automation. “I’m ambitious, I know for sure, but despite having a full-time job, ECT has awakened in me the quest for more information because every course comes with its own textbook and offers articles I can consult for detailed explanations. For this, I’m grateful to ECT. And to myself I say, ‘GO GIRL’ – you can attain any height you desire with this burning zeal.”

Unstoppable girl power

As the only female student in her cohort, Calista’s experience at ECT carries a sense of distinction within a largely male-dominated engineering environment. “As the only female student currently enrolled at ECT, my experience has been both unique and empowering. I have felt supported and encouraged throughout my learning journey, and the environment has been inclusively respectful. While being in the minority can sometimes feel challenging, it has also motivated me to stay focused, perform well, and serve as an example for other women considering engineering.”

Through her studies at ECT, Calista has improved her technical knowledge and skills relevant to her field, but she has been pleased to discover that her soft skills have developed, “Including improved analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and I have also strengthened my time management and self-discipline, which are essential for both academic and professional success.”

Calista also highlights how her learning has been translated into real-world applications. “I have been able to apply what I am learning to real-life situations by approaching tasks more critically and efficiently. The knowledge gained from ECT has enhanced my ability to analyze problems and contribute more confidently to technical discussions and decision-making processes.”
