Architectural Association School of Architecture joins IHE

IHE welcomes the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) as the latest member of our community.

As a leader in architectural education, the AA brings with it a 175-year legacy of innovation, experimentation, and critical inquiry.

Founded in 1847, the AA is one of the oldest schools of architecture in the UK. It was established as a student-centred collective with the ambition to radically transform architectural education. Today, it continues to be at the forefront of architectural thought and practice, known for its ability to push the boundaries of conventional design education.

The AA offers a broad range of programmes, including flexible and self-directed routes across a varied curriculum, from Foundation to PhD level. Their programmes are designed to empower students and staff to challenge accepted methods within contemporary architectural education by fostering creativity, intellectual rigour, and a hands-on understanding of the built environment.

The AA's connection to the architectural industry is a key strength, offering students real-world experiences through projects, internships, and industry-led workshops. These experiences ensure that AA graduates leave the school equipped with the practical skills and professional networks needed to succeed in today’s architectural landscape.

Christopher Pierce, AA Head of Visiting School, commented:

"The Architectural Association is delighted to join a growing community of independent providers and to benefit not only from the in-house expertise and experience at IHE and amongst its membership, but also to input and contribute to wider discussions impacting our part of the education sector."

Alex Proudfoot, IHE Chief Executive, said:

“We are pleased to welcome the Architectural Association, an institution of celebrated history and global renown, to our growing membership – one thriving professional community joining forces with another. This membership secures the AA’s position as a leader in independent higher education as well as in the architectural profession. Together, I know that we can go even further in promoting innovation and excellence where education meets industry.”

IHE looks forward to working closely with the AA and supporting its continued success.
