HR series with Eversheds Sutherland: Managing absence and sickness - Session 3

Join us for the third in a four-part series with IHE Partner Eversheds Sutherland.

This is a practical online session for IHE Members with Robert Gray of Eversheds Sutherland.

Managing sickness absence continues to present significant challenges for higher education providers, particularly as institutions respond to increasing pressures on staff wellbeing, workload and organisational resilience. Alongside the operational impact of both short- and long-term absence, employers must navigate complex legal considerations while ensuring staff are appropriately supported.

In this session, employment law specialists from Eversheds Sutherland will examine the legal framework and key considerations for managing sickness absence effectively and fairly. The session will explore issues including long-term illness, mental health-related absence, disability and reasonable adjustments, medical evidence, capability procedures and return-to-work processes.

The discussion will also consider the role that wellbeing support, supportive management practices and flexible working arrangements can play in helping to prevent or reduce absence. Drawing on current developments and sector trends, the session will look at the practical steps institutions can take to balance operational needs with their duties to support staff health and wellbeing.
