Join this event to hear more about the consultations from the Office for Students on two areas around Freedom of Speech, and give feedback to the IHE policy team ahead of the consultation response deadlines in March.
The first consultation proposes to regulate students’ unions, imposing monetary penalties where they feel SUs have not upheld Freedom of Speech. The second consultation proposes a free to use complaints scheme that allows students, staff, visiting speakers, job applicants and in some cases corporations to make a complaint about a loss they have suffered “because a university, college, or students’ union has not taken steps to secure their free speech within the law.”
Within the 16 proposals for the complaints scheme, members may have concerns around conflict with existing processes, as well as implications of publication of outcomes, and scope for frivolous complaints. Ahead of the consultation response deadlines in March, IHE are seeking views from members on how these proposals could affect them if implemented in August 2024.
